Grades 3-5
Introduction
One of the best sounds and smells is fresh popcorn! At the movies, at the fair, or at home, everyone likes to munch on popcorn. What is your favorite brand? Is the most expensive brand the best? You will conduct a taste test to find out.
Task List
You will compare several brands of popcorn – determining which tastes best, comparing price per serving and researching the production of corn per state. To find out how the competition stacks up, you will determine whether there is a relationship between price and quality of the product.
Process
You will have 3-5 brands of popcorn available for this survey. Each will be in a small drink cup labeled A-B-C-D-E respectively. Sample the popcorn and fill out the Popcorn Evaluation Sheet accordingly.
You will then be divided into small groups and conduct a market survey. A market survey is an activity in which researchers (YOU) gather information about possible users of a product (POPCORN) based on such characteristics as age, sex, income, education, and location. In your groups, you may survey school employees, family members, friends and neighbors. Data will be collected to find out the following: available range of flavors, where people eat popcorn, and their favorite flavors. Write a report and share the findings with your classmates. The entire class will put their information together and create a bar graph showing what they have discovered.
Conclusion
- When was popcorn first in use?
- Where is corn produced?
- What alternative uses can corn be used for?
- How might popcorn producers compete for your consumer dollar?
