Each student will buy (hypothetically) a car that will need to be financed. The student will need to look at different options and decide which will be the best choice for his situation. The student will need to find an advertisement for a car that he would like to purchase. Each student will hand in a report that details his findings.
Students will investigate unforseen costs of car loans and/or house loans. They will then evaluate the economics of decision making, the ramifications of their choices, and options available to them. Students will compute costs and savings for a car and/or house loan with or without added insurance costs.
This lesson creates a connection between derivatives and marginalism. Students engage in a set of scaffolding activities that explore the Marginal Cost Function, Marginal Revenue Function, and the implications that these functions have on production. A short video clip will provide example of why the intersection of Marginal Cost and Marginal Revenue yields maximum profit.
